When trying to decide which of the crochet a longs to follow I decided to make some of the squares from the 2018 Granny Square Cal when I realised that some of them seemed familiar and little bell tinkled in the far recesses of my brain oh yes! The Granny Square Afghan Sampler! back in 2012 I followed a crochet along for this, the blog is sadly no longer in existence so I can't link you back there but it was hosted by Blair Stocker and after doing just a little bit of research I have found her on Ravelry and her new blog Wise craft can be found here along with links to this project, I remember I enjoyed making the actual squares but not the joining up because they were all different sizes, what a challenge! first we were advised to make the center of the Afghan, it took me ages to figure it out...
and then join them together...
we then had to join the rest of the squares to the blanket..
I did try, in fact I tried for ages until I got fed up with it, I wasn't convinced that it would be worth all the work it would take to put it together or big enough to make a decent sized Afghan so it got stuffed into a bag and pushed out of sight, UNTIL NOW! yes six years later I have dug it out and have looked back and traced the project, I was so pleased to find that the whole project is there along with links to all the squares. I'm also quite ashamed to see that lots of people followed this CAL and managed to complete this Afghan with no difficulty at all and there are some lovely examples on Ravelry.
I have decided to try to put it together however, I know that it's no use me trying to put it together as it is, it would be too small to be practical and it would be so fiddly to fit this jigsaw together, so I'm going to enlarge each square to six inches and then include some of the squares from 2018 Granny Square CAL until it's the size I want, well that's the plan wish me luck.😊

I would definitely have a hard time putting odd sized things together. Now that you've pulled it out again and have a plan, I'm sure you'll finish it up nicely.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you, Linda! I guess you have just kept the squares on a black background but black looks good with all the squares and it also brings out the centre large piece.
ReplyDeleteYour squares are beautiful Linda.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't know how putting them together, you did a nice job!♥ But the blanket will be bigger, I'm curious to the end result.
How great that you kept the squares and now feel up to dealing with them. I think your solution of making them the same size is the right one.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing how you get on with this. Eleanor asked me to make her a blanket made out of different sized squares but it was too daunting so I made her a ripple blanket instead.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a challenging project! I'm looking forward to seeing it done. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love the crochet squares Linda. Thanks for sharing at Cooking and Crafting with J&J.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried different sized squares, they add a lot of interest but must be more difficult to join, or at least need more planning.

It'll be worth it, and quite fabulous when you are finished I'm sure! I love a good granny square project.
ReplyDeleteThat's very pretty. I once made a blanket from different size squares with some white and black ones thrown in.
ReplyDeleteDear Linda, I do wish you luck. What a lvely blanket it's going to become! Woudl you mind sharing your story to the Granny-Spiration Link-Up Party? It's online since yesterday, just follow this link: https://marie-lucienne.blogspot.com/2018/02/granny-spiration-link-up-party-2.html
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely Sunday,
Marjan
Oh my, this looks very difficult to figure out...BUT...if anyone can make sense of it, you can. I love this blanket. Love all the different sizes of each 'square'. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
ReplyDeleteA challenge, but you will master it.
ReplyDeleteI love how you managed to join all those different sized pieces. Very pretty. Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned!
ReplyDeleteGood for you getting a WIP back on track.
ReplyDeleteYou have done a great job of putting the squares together to make a really interesting blanket. Thanks for joining in my Ginx Woolly Linx party, and just to let you know that the March party is now open https://ginxcraft.blogspot.co.uk/2018/02/ginx-woolly-linx-party-march.html
