Looking Back At The Year Of The Sock

I try not to set myself resolutions or targets when it comes to a New Year, I used to and I would get very stressed when I wasn't able to meet them, now I have learnt to do what I can and be thankful for what I have achieved. Last year I did set myself a target to make four pairs of socks for my Lip reading group as you can see in this post here

I was convinced that I would manage that easily but when I set that challenge for myself I was in the sock making mode and had already made a pair for Kevin..

Kevin's socks came first, for his birthday in February

I didn't really enjoy making stripy socks and was looking forward to making a straightforward pair for my lip reading teacher Anne, that's when I went out and bought four balls of lovely sock yarn

Anne's Socks were ready by April..

I didn't really enjoy making these either because they were a large size and it took me while to discover that I had the wrong number of stitches on the needle and I had to start all over again, it seemed to take me ages to finish them, the finished result was worth it though because they turned out really well. I knew that the next pair would be more fun to make because the colours were so bright and cheerful and they were a smaller size ...

LIz's Socks were finished in May...

As I thought, these were a pleasure to make and didn't take me too long at all. So two pairs down and just two to go but by this time I was really fed up with sock making and decided to have a break..

Maria's socks were finished in September

I didn't enjoy making Maria's socks they seemed to take forever, it looked like my sock making mojo had well and truly gone and I still had Cecily's socks to make, I really couldn't do it and I felt really bad that I didn't have a pair of socks to gift to Cecily at Christmas, I don't think that she's that bothered I didn't make any promises and I did give her something else instead, but that ball of yarn looks at me accusingly, it's willing me to pick it up and get those socks underway, I still can't, and if I'm not in the mood there's no use me even trying, I'm happy that I managed to make four pairs of socks last year and I can't wait to meet up with the Lip Reading group to see if they liked them.

This year I'm just going to go with the flow and make whatever appeals to me, crafting is supposed to be fun right?

Have you made any resolutions this year?

Thank you for all the good wishes for the birth of little Sophie, she is two weeks old already and she says hi 💖

  1. Hi Linda, thanks for hanging in there for my long awaited post. It's funny that your post is about socks, I only said to my daughter the other day that I fancy making some socks again. Tom loved my hand knitted socks and I love them as well. Seeing your selection makes me want to order the yarn.
I prefer plain colours though, I'm not so keen on the multi colours.

  3. Linda, you made such pretty knitted socks. I love the colors and the patterns. I don't make any new year resolutions either. I hope you have a happy new year and happy crafting.

  5. Arh bless you, you did well with the socks that you made. It's always disappointing when you need to unpick and start again. I struggled for years to get my socks 'just right'. Having thin ankles meant that the 'calculations' just weren't working out. Once I dropped a size for casting on everything was good. Thanks to Winwick Mum for helping me get them right. I felt like Nora Batty wrinkled socks round my ankles ha ha.

  6. There's nothing like giving yourself a challenge to make something pleasurable turn into a chore, been there done that. Yes, I agree, our hobbies should definitely be enjoyable so take a break and I'm sure your sock making mojo will return at some point. The socks you did get done are fabulous, I love the stripey ones. Awww, little Sophie is a beauty.

  7. I don't really make resolutions. I figure each and every day is an opportunity to start anew, set a goal or intention. My aim was to blog and walk every day and so far so good. :) The socks are lovely, but I am like you. I just can't make something if I'm not feeling it. One day you'll make that extra pair of socks. Give sweet Sophie a cuddle and a kiss.

  8. Your socks are all fabulous, well done for finishing them - it's not always easy to knit socks for other people when they can't try them on regularly. You deserve a pair for yourself now ... when you can face them again! :) xx

  10. Even though you found it tough going at times with your sock making, the ones you made are beautiful. I still haven't faced making even one pair so I hold you in awe. Sophie looks so peaceful.
No resolutions here, just a gentle direction of travel :-)

  11. I don't make resolutions, but sorta make goals. Try to exercise more. I had pretty well for most of the year, then really lost my mojo with doing my planks. I have restarted them, but am well behind where I left off when doing them before. It's like starting all over again, so it shows how not keeping up is a mistake. I've always wanted to make socks, but have never tried. I'm working hard at trying to use up all the donated squares people have sent me over the last 15 years. Even though I stopped my charity, Bridge and Beyond, I still had squares so have continued to work with them to make ghans to donate to the family shelter. My other goal, to read less news. I will still stay up on what's going on, but won't continue with the 3 or 4 subscriptions I started when the orange blob was in the WH the last time. I just can't read that much again, it's not good for my BP. I know he's going to do horrific things each and everyday, so no surprises like before when I kept saying it can't be true. Love all your socks, but they all look stripy to me, or was the yarn self striping? We all have projects we start and can't get enthused by. I had one ghan for several years and periodically I would work a bit on it. Took forever, but I did finally get it done. The wee one is adorable!!
