Feeling Sorry for Myself.

Sometimes you wonder how so many things can happen all at once, life goes on in it's usual predictable pattern then it seems to be just one thing after another.

My department at work has been under scrutiny for the past year we thought that they would probably reduce the funding but just recently we have been told that they have made the decision to close down the Day Unit.

I've worked there for twenty years and it's been like a second home to me and to the many clients who attend, lots of friendships have been made, people who have been pushed in in a wheelchair their confidence in shreds have walked out, their strength, mobility and confidence restored thanks to the dedicated team of nurses physiotherapists, occupational therapists and carers who have looked after them.  It's so sad that places like this are closing down, because there is nothing to replace them.

I have been offered alternative hours anywhere I like in the Care Centre but my heart isn't in it. My colleagues and myself  are very angry with the outcome and because we the staff weren't given a voice in the decision making process, but really I know it's all about money at the end of the day.

So my dears I will be retiring, I had hoped to enjoy many more working years but under the circumstances I feel I've made the right decision, my last day at work will be the 16th December and my challenge will be to see how I can manage to survive on the state pension, thank goodness I have plenty of yarn.😊

A FLOOD!
Just to add insult to injury last Friday as I was sitting eating breakfast I heard a dripping noise, looked up to find water dripping through the ceiling in the living room I jumped up looked into the hall and found water streaming down the stairs, walls and through the light fitting.   The kitchen was flooded too, I ran up the stairs the landing was drenched and so was the bathroom.

I was in a wild panic I have never been so scared in all my life at that moment I froze and couldn't think what to do, this is from one that prides herself about being good in an emergency! ha what a laugh.

Anyway now two days later I can tell you it was caused by a split water pipe behind the toilet, I have spent the weekend mopping up and have had the insurance people out. Verdict...ceilings will have to come down, carpets and laminate flooring taken up and destroyed, floorboards lifted, wallpaper stripped off, kitchen cupboards removed and the whole place left to dry out before being put back together again.  As you can imagine Christmas is definitely cancelled in this house this year.

Lessons learn't...
Know where your stop tap is and make sure you have the strength to turn it on and off, mine was so stiff and it wasn't completely off when I thought it was, even better have one of these installed.
My insurance documents were on-line and I couldn't get to them because the electric was off, make sure you download them and keep them in a known place. Keep the phone number in your phone.
Just have a think about who you can call in an emergency in advance (and an alternative in case they don't answer their phone) because believe me when an emergency happens your mind can go completely blank.

Last week the breaks on my car wouldn't work it was terrifying and I was lucky I didn't have an accident, but when I took the car to the garage the mechanic said that he couldn't find anything wrong? Since then the breaks have been fine but today for some reason the car wouldn't start, do you think that someone up there is playing games with me.😕

TO END ON A HAPPY NOTE!

I have treat myself to this...

may as well treat myself while I still can, lovely sock yarn it makes my heart sing just to look at it.

and..

I routed around my stash and found 15 totally random balls of yarn and have started this blanket..

Just the thing to keep my mind off things and to stop me going crazy.😏

I'll be linking with Jennifer's winter project link party, you can see all the other great parties I will be linking too over on my right sidebar.

Have a great week.

  1. I'm so very sorry you'll loose your job that you love so much!
I understand you don't want to work just anywhere in the Care Centre, but do you have that free choise, to decide you stop working, and start retirement? Here in The Netherlands we are not allowed to make that choice, if you do, it is considered "refusing-to-work" and that means you will not receive any unemployment fee or something like that. Retirement starts at 67 years now in our country (used to be 65).
Really unfortunately, the water flooting, the car not working properly, I wish you all the best for this december, and really hope 2017 will be a great year for you!
    Love, Anja

  2. Aw I can understand your frustration. It always seems like its one thing after another. The last couple of years have seemed that way for us too. Hang in there. There's bound to be brighter days ahead. Hope your house gets fixed soon. ♥

  3. I'm so sorry to hear that! I do understand as I too work in a hospitable - in the community section and we have had one restructure after another that has been all about removing jobs to save money! Naturally it's not working from an employee viewpoint and the stress and strain on staff is very evident. Some have left while other stuff have had to readjust to different work environments.
Sorry to hear that horrid flooding in your house! Hope it dries out quickly xoxox

  4. I'm so sorry that your life is being so disrupted at present, Linda. It is horrible when you don't have a voice in such crucial decision making. But I'm sure you will have made the right decision. I'm glad your stash wasn't affected by the leak! Lovely colour choices for the blanket.

  5. I was flooded out once, my heart aches for you, it is such hard work both physically and mentally dealing with the aftermath. Love the sock yarn, I am knitting with WYS right now, socks in DK.I do have some 4 ply ready for the warmer weather though.

  6. Oh, I feel sorry for you! Can't imagine how sad you are to leave your job this way...
And it must be terrible, that water accident! Once we had a frozen pipe and we had water in our hallway. I was frozen myself too, didn't know who to call, what to do... so I think it's perfectly normal that you were afraid.
And that car... hope it will behave normal from now on!That sounds really dangerous!
Wishing you all the best, a lot of rest and a lot of yarn Linda!
    Take care,
    Sigrid

  8. Oh Linda, I'm so sorry to hear about the job. I mean seriously, you are there to heal and help, and yet none of that matters if the powers that be aren't making the almighty dollar. I'm sure something could be worked out but they never want to take the time to really make a difference. It's easier to just say it's over and done. Fortunately, you have plenty to keep you busy. It does seems that setbacks come in the threes -- the flooded house and then the car. I think you've had your share of upheaval for now. Perhaps this is the storm before the calm. 2017 should be smooth sailing. Blessings and best wishes, Tammy

  9. So sorry, Linda. You are going through lots of trouble all at the same time and I know how angry and scared you must have been. A yarn party is always a great stress buster. I hope things will slowly resolve and you will get used to new routine over a period of time. But I think if you have been working for so many years, there is no harm in taking part- time job offers if you want to have additional income. Else just enjoy life, there is always good in something, everything can't be bad.

  10. Oh Linda, how awful. The destruction sounds terrible. I hope that you can manage to get things sorted as quickly as possible. Your advice about emergencies is very thought-provoking. I shall have to sit down and devise a strategy.
I think your sock yarn purchases are beautiful, and under the circumstances, fully deserved.
Your blanket looks lovely. I always find stash-diving a very therapeutic activity.
Retirement may not have been your choice just yet, but at least it will give you the time to sort your home out. Best wishes to you.

Meanwhile, you do right to create and keep your mind off ;)

  14. I know it is so hard when things like this happen we recently had floods here during a hurricane and several friends lost everything they owned. I have found that when things go crazy like they seem to be in your life right now. I tend to count my blessings by comparing what is happening to me to what others are going through and all at once it doesn't seem so big. another way to look at the water damage is great now you are going to get brand new floors and by the time its all done it will all look brand new. as for your breaks it could be possible that they became wet" have you been through puddles of water when they stopped working. if not you might want to check another mechanic because I have had mine go out while at work and that is not fun believe me. God Bless and things will always look better tomorrow.

  15. Oh Linda I'm sorry you're having such a crappy time and it is so sad that your unit is closing. I hope all of your disasters are out of the way now and 2017 brings you a more peaceful time, full of yarn of course x

  16. You will really love retirement and it is true that you will wonder how you ever had time to go to work. As for consulting staff about cuts, forget it. My bosses did that only because they had to. It was a complete waste of time as they ignored everything we said. I think that is worse than not being consulted. I was picturing all your recent home renovations being ruined. I'm not surprised you are feeling sorry for yourself. But it will be an opportunity to get the professionals in to do it again. Thanks for the info about the stop cock. Mine is very hard to turn as well. I will keep the new one in mind.

  17. I feel for you ...I do!!! Last week was a pig of a week.....someone somewhere must have decided to make it Black week of the year I think!!! On the Tuesday rushing to get to another class I reversed into a pillar in a car park and ripped off my side mirror, side indicator and buckled the door...sigh!! Horribly expensive.....so I know how you feel.Coincidentally I went to buy myself some yarn too at the end of the week! A yarn fix doesn't solve much but it did make me feel better!
So hope things in the house get sorted quicker than you think and especially sorry to hear about your job ....to some we are just names on a paper...so unfair!!!

    Take care now

    Amanda xx

  19. Oh Linda, hopefully that's your bad luck comes in threes done. These cutbacks make my blood boil - what do they think people will do???
Maybe in the new year you could get a part time job in a wool shop! X I would have totally panicked seeing all the water coming in like that too.

  20. Oh Linda, I have no words. CLosing down your unit is awful, where will all of those people in need get help? Your massive leak, that is a huge disaster and your brakes, my Lord! I think it will all end up okay it is just in the middle it is such a mess, literally. You are so kind and lovely, I wish none of this was happening to you my friend.

  21. HI Linda! I am sorry to know you had to make such a big decision, but I hope this also brings to you some kind of good changes. More time for yourself and things you like to do.
I do hope that your house will be in order soon too, things like this happen and we tend to freak out... I am sure everything is going to be fine soon.
    Take care! Hugs!

  22. I've sat for 5 minutes thinking what to type, as everything I start just sounds like a bit of a platitude. It is really hard leaving a job that you love, and especially under those circumstances. But I am sure that for someone like you retirement will offer lots of other exciting things. As for all the domestic disasters - well sometimes life is just a bitch (sorry for the bad language, but I can't think of any other way of putting it).

  23. That is so sad Linda. It will be such a shame for those who you cared for as well. I hope that whatever life brings in the new year you will enjoy it and it will be fun, a door opening on to new things perhaps. xx

  24. I'm sorry you've been having a rubbish time. It all sounds quite stressful. Some colourful yarny goodness is good at cheering up, isn't it? Your blanket looks great so far.

  25. I am really sorry you are forced into retirement, it is a shame that money rules the world, not kindness. I hope your house will be dried out for Christmas, what a disaster! Wishing you many happy crochet hours.

  27. Sorry to hear you had so much trouble, Linda. 2016 was a bad year for us, too. Let’s hope 2017 will be a much better one!! About your work, try to make the best of it and enjoy your free time. Maybe you can spread your love by doing some voluntary work? Fingers crossed that the damages by water can be renovated quickly and that your car will be as good as gold. Your new sock yarn is great and I love the blanket you’re making. Working with yarn is such a balm for the soul!! Hugs & despite everything a cozy Advent weekend, Nata xxx

  29. Oh, Linda, I am sorry to hear about the hard time you've been having lately. I am sure you will love retirement, but obviously it would have been better under different circumstances. Your house repairs sound big, I'm sorry you have to go through that. Thankfully your car did not cause an accident. I needed a lot of work done to my car just recently and I'm only just now getting back into my normal routine since not having it to drive for a while. Thank you for joining in with my link party. I am very glad you're finding comfort and peace in your crafting. The colors in your blanket look very pretty. Hang in there and take care, Linda.
