As some of you will be aware I am a member of Loving Hands a group of lovely people who knit, crochet and sew for a number of charities and have been since 2009. We have a lively forum and a 'would anybody like' thread where members offer unwanted craft items to other members.
Last week one of the members asked if anyone would like a tapestry frame that had been given to her and she had no use for, I had been thinking of buying one because I'm really enjoying embroidery and cross stitch again so I jumped at the chance and it was delivered yesterday, I had to laugh because it was a bit like pass the parcel Karen had wrapped it so well but I was delighted when I finally managed to get it open....
I love that Tapestry! I haven't done a tapestry since I was 24 years old when I first went to Syria where I lived for nearly twenty years. They had a huge market there where you could buy everything that you could possibly need craft wise, I remember I was like a kid in a candy store and seeing this brought it all back to me. Of course the subject matter is very English in this Tapestry, funnily enough the one I did in Syria was too.
I had planned on removing the tapestry and putting the twelve days of Christmas cross stitch into the frame but I have decide to leave it in and work on this too. 😊
Last weekend my son and daughter in law and little grandson Mikey came through for a socially distanced visit we met in a car park right next to the sea front and we had a walk along the promenade. Mikey loves water and the sea in particular and insisted on getting as close as he could . It was inevitable that a huge wave would come along and drench him and my daughter in law haha, luckily Christa had clean clothes in his bag and she was able to change his trousers and socks and blot the worst of the water out of his shoes.
We walked back to the car park just before the heavens opened, got a take away coffee and sat in our respective cars with the windows down and chatted while the rain splashed down around us a lot of it coming in through the window too. It was short but very sweet and so lovely to see them and so hard not to be able to kiss and cuddle my little grandson and it looks like things are only going to get worse.
I have been making a lot of soup of late as it seems the most logical thing to eat right now, you can't beat a lovely bowl of homemade soup when the weathers getting cooler and the days shorter. I had some chestnut mushrooms and wanted to use those but because of my gastric reflux problems I have to be careful...
I had a search and found this recipe
Mushroom Soup
Ingredients
- 50g/2oz butter
- 2 leeks, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 300g/9oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2-3 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves only
- 600ml/1 pint chicken or vegetable stock
Hi Linda, I love your tapestry! Did you do that one or did it come with the frame? Poor Mikey getting soaked. I remember that happening to me at Staithes when I was about 5 years old, our Cynthia dragging me back 'home' up the hill, me bawling my head off. Happy days! xxx
ReplyDeleteThe tapestry came with the frame Babs and has yet to be stitched, I'll do it slowly. Mikey was laughing his head off he loves the water and wasn't in the slightest bit upset. xx
DeleteLovely gift indeed !!! And pictures too !
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that we can't cuddle our love ones....
Stay safe ! Have a cozy weekend !
Anna
We are eating home made soup most days, it's perfect food for this time of year.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a lovely group that you're a part of and how fortunate to have that tapestry frame passed on to you, it will be so handy, and will probably ignite the urge to work on the tapestry now too. I'm so pleased you were able to spend some time with your family, even though it must be so hard resisting the cuddles. It's been a funny old year, especially for those with young children in their family, it's so hard to keep our distance from those we love.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely tapestry to receive. So glad you had a visit with Mikey and family, even if socially distanced. Our granddaughter is 11 tomorrow and she is having a drive by birthday celebration, so we will be going to that, and also have a driveway visit. Hope your weather improves. It is getting colder here, we had our first taste of snow a couple of days ago, but today the sun is shining.
ReplyDeleteThe tapestry is so nice Linda. How nice to go for a walk near the water. It's the perfect time of year to make soup and yours looks and sounds so good. I've never made mushroom soup and I'll have to give this a try. Enjoy the weekend.
ReplyDeletePleased you were able to spend time with family ...
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely soup season isn't it.
All the best Jan
How sad that you can't kiss and cuddle Mikey, but how wonderful you were able to enjoy his and your son's and daughter-in-law's company, albeit for a little while. I love the photo of your daughter-in-law and Mikey walking on the beach. That tapestry is a lovely picture. You will enjoy working on this pretty. That mushroom soup sounds very tasty. I cannot wait to see photo after photo of your, what I just know will be, amazing Queen CAL blanket.
ReplyDeleteHomemade soup is a staple at our house too. Looks like a wonderful visit with your grandson and his parents, even if there were no hugs. The tapestry will be a fun project to while away the hours.
ReplyDeleteThat tapestry is beautiful. How wonderful that you got to visit with your family. It is so hard right now, but so necessary. I am always uplifted by stories of socially distant visiting, because I know that there are people out there who take this whole mess seriously and are doing their best to stay safe and keep others safe. We must hope that more people will do the same so that we can hug our families soon. I too have been making soup. Makes you feel all warm inside. Can't wait to see the Queen blanket. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your new stitching project! The fibre guild I belong has done similar sharing. Always fun!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great gift, and glad you were able to socially distance visit with your family!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to find this project that brought back fond memories!
ReplyDeleteThe photos of the family outing are beautiful..we will always remember the visits of 2020!
What a wonderful thing - to get a partially done tapestry in a tapestry frame. Years ago I did crewel work and I used a frame at the time. I got rid of the frame and have only recently rediscovered them. This time I added a table/lap stand. I need a stand of some sort so the frame is manageable for my wrists. I hope you enjoy stitching this beauty. What a nice time with your family, but it makes me so sad that grandparents have to worry about picking something up this dreadful virus from the little ones.
ReplyDeleteMmm, nothing nicer than home made soup on a dull day. I enjoy making soup too. So nice that you could catch up with your family, being socially distanced is a small price to pay these days, I think
ReplyDeleteThe weather's been awful here too - I was finally able to get out this weekend and walk. Before that it was just too cold and rainy and snowy.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you were able to see your family. I hope you'll get to cuddle that dear grandson sooner rather than later. Enjoy your tapestry and delicious soup!
I am so happy you met your son and family. This will recharge your batery, during this hard time we are all living.
ReplyDeleteI have a wood croll frame but it is so heavy that is is difficult to handle it.
The tappestry is wonderful, enjoy stitching it.
