At Last!

I know I have been promising to show you my Moogly Blanket for ages but for one reason or another I haven't been able to so here it is at last!..

I finished it in quite a hurry just before Christmas, I didn't really have time to consider how I was going to join it or what edging to use.

Putting a large blanket together does have it's challenges, I placed all the squares on the bed, stood on a stool so that I could get a bird's eye view then kept switching them around until I got the layout I was happy with.

I then sewed them in strips on the wrong side, sewed the strips together, then joined them again in dc/sc on the front. if I'd had time I would have made a cream border round each of the squares before joining but I was in a hurry to get it finished in time to gift to my daughter for Christmas. I'm pleased to say that she really loved it, it's such an interesting blanket with all the different designs and textures.  

I kept the edging very simple because of the complexity of the squares and because of the lack of time and I think it worked very well, One round of dc(sc), two rounds of htr(hdc) and a final round of crab stitch which is my favourite stitch for edging. 

I made this blanket purely out of stash yarn so I managed to bust quite a lot of my Aran stash in fact the last squares were quite a challenge because I had to go with the colours I had left.  Unfortunately I didn't have time to weigh it so I'm not sure exactly how much yarn it took.

I hope that everyone has had a great Christmas! I wonder how many of you managed to get any crafting done.  I'm using the time to try and get caught up on my wips and I'm so happy to announce that my Moogly blanket is finished, but before I reveal it I want show you the final four squares ...

More V's Please designed by Melinda Miller

 I made this one in place of  block 21.  I really enjoyed making this and I found it quite easy.  I needed just one more in one colour to balance out the blanket.  You can find the pattern here

SmoothFox's Amethyst Square

I made this one in place of block 22  which was one of the alternatives.  It looks so much nicer in real life the colours go so well together, This one was designed by  Donna Mason-Svara  and you can find the pattern here

Picot flowers 

This was block 23 and I really didn't enjoy making it that much, it seemed to take an awful long time to finish, probably because of all the picots, it didn't grow very much either and I needed to work four extra rounds to get the desired size.  You can find the pattern here

Larksfoot Inspired.

Made instead of block 24 this one is from an entirely different CAL (Keep calm and crochet) but I love it and it was an easy square to make.  As usual my tension must have been way off because it twisted quite a bit but thank goodness it was fine after blocking. The colours I've chosen don't really show off the design but I had to use what I had left in my stash.

Coming Along Nicely

Today Block 21 will be released for the 2015 Moogly Afghan CAL only four more to go I can't believe it, I'm just dying to get these blocks all sewn up into a blanket.  

Here are the last three that I made starting with the last one...

Block 20
Fan Dance by Dolly Plum

This is one of the alternative choices the one chosen French Corner although it's a beautiful square I don't want any corner squares in my blanket so I chose this one instead which I think is amazing.  
I found the first rounds very easy but got very lost later on, my stitch count was way out, I found the instructions very confusing and hard to follow, I'm not blaming the designer because others have made this and found it very easy, I'm sure it's my feather brain that finds it very hard to concentrate sometimes.  

The only way I was able to complete it was by looking at pictures of the block and trying to figure it out, it was with a huge sigh of relief that I finally got a finished result, not perfect by any means but it will do just fine for me. 

Block 19
Dream Circle by Carolyn Christmas

I think this one is just beautiful too, you know there are some very talented designers out there and well done to Tamara for finding all these beautiful blocks. 

 I enjoyed making this one and I was able to follow the pattern quite easily I love it!

Block 18 
Colorburst Afghan Square by Christine Mullen

I enjoyed making this one a lot, it was super easy, some of the people following this CAL were a little apprehensive about making a square from side to side instead of in the round because it's harder to control the size but maybe I was just lucky because it was one of the few that turned out a perfect 12 inches square.  I loved the pattern for this and I have a feeling I may be using it to make a blanket or even a hat or scarf.

Catching Up

I'm still way behind with the Moogly Cal but here are three more, two of which I managed to complete last weekend....

Block 15 
Cupcake Celebration Square by Jenny Thomas 

A lovely fun square, it was easy enough to make but that cherry on the top was a bit of a nightmare, if I make it again I will just use a French knot. It's also turned out just a bit short of 12 inches so I think I will add another round of sc.

Block 16
Lilies on the Water by  Deborah Ziegler

This one was easy too and is a very pretty square, but is wasn't very pretty before I blocked it I would say that it was a bit of a twisted mess so if you do attempt it don't worry it will look fine after blocking, again this one turned out a tiny bit on the small side I'm hoping that it won't matter too much when I sew it into the blanket.

Block 17
Esme's Winter Cottage by Dedri Uys

Well I think this one is beautiful but boy did it have me tearing my hair out, it needed maximum concentration and still I made mistakes but to be fair the same can be said for most of them it does take a while for the penny to drop, I do get there in the end even though the end result is nowhere as neat and perfect as it should be.  

Two more to go before I'm all caught up do you think I can do it before Thursday 1st October? thats when block 20 will be announced just five more to go I can't believe it.

Block Ten
Whimsical Penelope’s Merry Go Round 

This one seemed to take forever to make because you are crocheting in the space below on each round. It has also turned out a little bit twisted so perhaps my tension was too tight, I'm hoping that it will be fine after a good blocking. Pattern here

Spring Fling

I made this one instead of the featured one which you can see here  I did like the one that was featured but I didn't have the time to give it my full attention so chose one of the alternatives, I really love this square and I think it looks very effective in the one colour, I will try and make the featured one when I have more time.  You can find the pattern to the one above here

Block Thirteen 

Tip Toe through the Tulips (alternative)

It's great that Tamara has provided us with lots of alternatives because I didn't really fancy block thirteen either even though it's pretty I don't want a star in this particular afghan, (you can see the pattern here) so I chose the one above instead which I really like but not so much all the ends that needed weaving in. Pattern here

Block Fourteen

Tamara Square

This one was actually designed for Tamara you can find the pattern here  I like it a lot and it was easy to make too.  

I have found that all of these squares turn out less than the required 12" even when I use a bigger hook I always have to do an extra round or two, I'm thinking that our UK aran weight yarn is probably a tad finer than the US worsted weight. 


I am enjoying making these square's but I'm finding there is so much going on here at home right now I don't have the time I wish I had to devote to my crafting or even my blog come to that so if I disappear for awhile please bear with me I will be back. :)

Trying to Catch Up

I have been trying to catch up with the Moogly CAL I have made quite a few of the squares but as yet haven't had time to blog about them so here are a few more.

Block Seven
 Pinwheel Afghan Square

This one was easier than it looks but there were a lot of ends to weave in, you can find the pattern here

Block Eight
Springtime Lily Pond Square

I'm not convinced that mine looks much like a Lily pond and I can't see the lilies either but it was easy enough to make. You can find the pattern here

Block Nine
Spring Burst 

I like this one I think it's very pretty, you can find the pattern here

Which one is your favourite? I love the flower in the centre of block nine but also quite like the windmill effect of block seven.

This Thursday block 14 will be announced so you can see just how far behind I am but I will get there I'm determined to have a blanket at the end of the year.

More Progress

Moogly Afghan CAL 2015

The next block for the crochet along will be out tomorrow and I'm all caught up at least with the making of them but not with the blogging we have now completed eight blocks here are blocks five and six....

Block 5
This was a nice one to make with a photo tutorial, I had to work an extra round for this to get the required 12 inches.  Although it is a pretty square it's just a bit too lacy for a blanket square for my liking.

Unbroken Hearts Granny Square

Those holes in the centre are quite huge, I may replace it with one with a more closed pattern but I will leave it for now and decide later

Block 6

Fountain of Roses

I chose one of the alternatives for block six because although the chosen block Solstice Sun Rising  was beautiful it was another very lacy design.  

I really love this square and the pattern was well written I can easily see the fountain in the middle and I think that the rose rounds are so pretty.

Crocheting Along and what another one?!

I hope that you have all had a great Easter weekend and that the Easter Bunny was good to you all!  I think that it's the first Easter that I haven't gorged myself with chocolate but I wasn't about to risk a relapse of my gall bladder problems and I feel so virtuous for being good :)
Life here at the crafty corner has been hectic with family visits over the whole four days, we have been blessed with lovely weather for a change, it's so nice to see the sun shine again and we have been out and about in it as much as we could which means that I haven't had a minute for my blog or any of yours so I have a lot of catching up to do.

I haven't had time to do much crocheting either but I'm nearly caught up with The Moogly Afghan CAL we are now working block seven,  I have managed to make six of them so far but they haven't all had their photo shoot so for today here is ...

Block Three
The Windmill Square

I chose to make it in one colour because I felt that the texture of the pattern stood out better.  It was an easy one to make you can find the pattern here

Square Four
Family Square

I loved this square until I tried to make it, it was definitely not one for a beginner simply because I found the pattern hard to follow.  The only way I was able to make it work was by looking at the picture of the square and working it out for myself, as for the border even though it was lovely it was very long winded and I just couldn't be bothered with all the work involved ( the lazy crocheter coming out again) so I used the cross stitch which I had used for one of the rounds of the mini rings rug and I love how it's turned out. The original border is beautiful and the more patient  crocheters have managed it without any problem.  You can see it with the pattern here

Mystery Afghan CAL

I always look forward to Tuesdays, eagerly awaiting the next clue I love this CAL it's so much fun and it's lovely to see everyones progress here on facebook.

week seven was the first two rounds of the border using the same cross stitch  which I used above so I felt comfortable using it right from the start.

We have another two weeks which are to be devoted to the border I'm hoping that the next rounds will bring it in a little because it's rippling quite a bit at the moment.

So that's it for now I am itching to start some knitting wool an needles are at the ready but I need to finish off a baby blanket before I start.. 

but before I go there is another GREAT CAL starting TODAY! it's the Lily Pond CAL if you haven't heard about it take a look it is the most beautiful blanket, it's so popular that yarn packs for the CAL sold out ages ago but of course you can use your own choice of yarn and colours. I would love to make it and I'm thinking about it, what about you is anyone gonna join in? 

I will be visiting you all as soon as I can!
