In Remembrance

Once again the time has got away from me and it must be two weeks since I wrote a blog post but I have been busy these past few weeks and it will only get busier as Christmas approaches, there's not enough hours in the day! 

The knitting and crochet groups from our u3a got together to make poppies in order to make a display in Remembrance of those who lost their lives in conflict.

We started this a bit too late for it to have much of an impact but we were busy with the Station Display previous to this and we are also making warm woolly items for the homeless, I honestly didn't know which way to turn crochet wise I have had so much on my hook of late, but back to the poppies I did mention them back here. 

Although this is for a good cause I found myself  at poppy burnout, there comes a time when you just can't bring yourself to make another single one, I didn't actually count how many I made but there were a fair few made after I took this photo and I forgot to take another photograph at the end.

Last Sunday morning  members of the groups got together and assembled not one but two displays, the first onto the railings of a Primary school where Pamela the leader of the knitting group works, pupils will be encouraged to tie their own poppies to the fence too.

The second display was assembled in front of the war memorial outside our Town Hall.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,

Yarn Bombing The Station.

 Early last Sunday morning before most people had even risen from their beds a group of knitters armed with bags and bags of knitted and crocheted items, arrived at Seaham station, the plan was to decorate the station and put a smile on peoples faces after the long dreary months of Covid-19 and lockdown.

As commuters stood on the platform watching with interest, the station was slowly transformed, passing trains revealed passengers smiling pointing and peering out of the windows trying to get a good look at what was going on.

It took nearly three hours but the results were well worth the effort, it was a lot of fun and we all enjoyed every minute of it. As people came and went it was obvious that it was a huge success, questions were asked about the u3a and lots of interest was shown. 

I left a lot of my painted stones around with our u3a address on the back, which have incidentally become quite famous the picture of my rocks was the headline in the June u3a National Newsletter.

It has led to requests for me to teach how to paint rocks which made me smile as I'm certainly no expert, I can however point people in the right direction and I may start a Rock Art tab at the top of my blog which will have links as to where people can find more information. 

In other news our u3a website has been down for almost a week, apparently the auto renew for our domain didn't work and so we have had to purchase it again, it's been quite complicated process but thankfully it's now working again.  It brought it home to me just how poor my knowledge is in terms of technology, anything out of the ordinary completely throws me. 

I have been so busy with u3a things these past two weeks I haven't had much time for anything else so I'm now off to have a look around blogland to see what you have all been up to.

Something To Make You Smile

I am a member of a lovely group called The Knicky Knack Knitters who are part of Seaham and District U3A.  For the past year or so we have been making all sorts of marine type objects from seaweed to mermaids the plan being to provide a nautical display for Seaham Marina. 

 

We all met early one sunny Friday morning and set about tying the display to any available railing.  



I was quite sceptical about the whole project to be honest, a lot of work went into the making and planning and I was afraid that the whole display would be ruined by the weather and possibly by vandals.



I'm so pleased that I was proved wrong, nearly two weeks later it still looks as good as it did when we first put it up and we have had a lot of wind and rain.



I have never really been a big fan of yarn bombing I've always thought that the yarn could be put to better use but I completely changed my mind on that first morning, as people began to drift down to the Marina the huge smiles on their faces as they caught their first glimpse of the display said it all.

 Some pieces are displayed inside the cafe's and shops too. 

My beach hut display resides in one of the cafe's, which hut would you like to rent? 😊

lollipop anyone?

We all need a bit of light relief away from the madness of everyday life and if this can put a smile on someones face and provide them with that then it's all been worthwhile.  Thank you to Pamela our amazing group leader for the great idea and her endless encouragement and enthusiasm.
