Please Turn it off

I don't mean to be rude and tell you how to run your blog but I know many are with me when I say this, word verification is a PAIN!.  When I see those little boxes my heart sinks, it usually takes me several attempts of clicking on the refresh button to even see the words and numbers I'm supposed to be typing  then I will type them in only to see it's failed and I have to start all over again, it's very frustrating to say the least, sometimes I have to just give up. Then sometimes I leave a comment and move straight on to the next blog only to discover later that my comment hasn't been published because word verification was present and I hadn't seen it.

I have had a problem with spammers lately so I enabled comment moderation for a while and deleted the particular post that was attracting it and have had no problems since.

For those who don't know how to do it, First click on settings and then posts and comments and you can turn it off there.

I know many of you are of the same mind please read Theresa's post on the subject here  it says it all.

  1. I so agree with you Linda, my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be, but even with my monitor specs its still difficult to make out the letters. Its easy enough just to enable comment moderation which allows you to either publish or delete comments. I think maybe some people dont even know they have it, it seems as if blogger has put it onto all blogs since its last upgrade. I beg you, please check your settings one and all.

  2. Yaaaay. So glad you wrote this! I did an entire blog post on "how" to turn it off a few months ago, but people STILL didn't take the steps to do it. I've quit commenting on blogs that require it. Good post!

  6. It drives me mad. It took me 5 attempts to leave a comment last night. Then it said my comment had to wait for approval. Half the time the numbers are illegible. Moan over :) Thanks for letting people know about this.

  8. I don't really see the need for word verification. I moderate all comments and only allow comments from registered users. I haven't had any problems. My other pet hate is blogs that can only be followed through the upgraded version of Google...i.e. not free.

  9. Thanks for this post, Linda - I'm totally on your side here! I, too, had problems with spam and so I enabled the comment moderation function. Unfortunately I get spam in several blog posts (I don't see a pattern here), that's why I probably have to keep it this way. I rather have my reader wait for their comments to appear, then bother them with word verification!

  10. I'm glad we are all of the same mind it's quite ironic that I had a spammer on this post so comment moderation is going back on for the time being :)

  11. I haven't had the spamming issue yet..thank goodness!
I hate captchas etc...such a pain!..and they are "default" when you create a blog. I had someone tell me it was on or I wouldn't have known! Took it off immediately..it's been months.

  14. I turned mine off some time ago because I get frustrated trying to see those crazy letters and blurry numbers. I have moderation on my comments--makes it easier to somewhat keep up with seeing what people say anyway and I'm able to catch the spam before it can be posted. Good post!

  17. I had terrible month with spammers. There was at least 2-3 spam comments in my mail folder each morning and then received an other 5 during the day. But I didn't want to turn on the word verification, because it is really frustrating, so now I am allowing comment just for users with OpenID. Since then I don't have problems with spammers.

  18. Thanks for this! I didn't realize that captcha was there as a default setting. I haven't done much blogging consistently, but intend to, so your post today came at the right time!

  19. I know what you mean, Linda. I don´t know what annoys me more: word verifcation or spam. I guess both! At times I have considered putting on the filter, but I want to keep my blog friendly. I hope Blogger finds a solution for this problem.

    1. Thank you for all your comments on this, since I have written this post I am getting more spam than ever, it's as if they are saying we will show you! so the comment moderation will be staying on for a while, but I will NOT be using word verification :)
