Something Different

Last weekend a friend just happened to mention that there was an exhibition of rugs in a community centre not too far from us.  Well as you know anything goes for me if it's craft related so I convinced my friend that we should have a look and see what it was all about.
What a fantastic time we had, I spent ages chatting to the rug makers, I had no idea how diverse this art was, I was completely fascinated and captivated I have to say.  I have done some latch rug hooking many years ago but there is so much more to it than buying your bits of wool and pulling them through with a latch hook.

Anyway I'm going to shut up and show you the pictures which I'm sorry aren't the best quality because they were taken on my phone......silly me didn't take my camera, I didn't think I'd need it lesson to self take camera at all times!!!

They were even selling oddments of wool and hand made items, I bought these

for just £1.50 and had a lovely conversation with an elderly lady who asked me what I was going to make with it, she thought it would make a lovely baby hat.

and these

just 50 pence each not bad eh

AND...there were home baked goodies! well I had to sample some of the yummy quiche and cake.

I must say it really whetted my appetite.... no not the cakes the rugs, I want to explore further and find out more about it I'm thinking beautiful wall hangings, if anyone indulges in this kind of thing, please spill and tell all. :)

  1. I think rug hooking is such an interesting craft, the ones I have seen in person have been really fascinating. Lots of work, but it looks like fun.

    1. Yes Meredith I think so too. some of he rugs were priced at £250 so that reflects just how much work has gone into them. :)

  2. Hello Linda, I was thrilled to see the hooked rug from your world.. LOVED them all. I especially loved the first one.. I can not figure out if it is a garden or the sea.. I also like the second to last photo of rugs. I think it maybe more of the first one. Hooking Rugs over here in the states are gaining popularity more and more.. Even me got the bug. I have only done one wee star but it was sooooooooooooo much fun creating it. Thanks for sharing you lovely outing with us... Hugs Judy

  3. I used to make these rugs many years ago. They take forever to make so I can understand the high prices. My sister has looked after hers very well and it still looks like new. You bought some real bargains as well. The craft fairs are starting up soon in my area and you've inspired me to take a look.

    1. The Christmas tree one looked so much better in real life Ali, it was a wall hanging it would be lovely to have something like that to bring out each Christmas. :)

  6. If I had to pick a favourite I especially love the one above the owl, I think it's a rather busy garden, I can see birds and water and a maybe frog. The phone pictures are better than no pictures but it's definitely a lesson learned Linda. The owl one is my next favourite, you can tell that a lot of time and effort has gone into creating them all. Linda, they would make fab wall hangings, just let your imagination jump right in there :-)

    1. I know it's easy enough drawing a pattern on a canvas but making a free form one like your favourite would take quite a bit of imagination I think Linda, I'm not sure I'm talented enough to do one like that, I'm definitely thinking about it though, maybe start off with something simple. :)

  7. What a lovely outing for you and your friend! The rugs are all beautifully done and so much work - my Mum did quite a few latched rugs in her time and I did 1 (only one) many years ago but I'm afraid my hands and wrists wouldn't be happy with such exercise these days. Thanks so much for showing us your pics Linda. Joy x

    1. Yes you do have a point there Joy, it does take it out on your hands especially the proddy rug, it takes a certain amount of force to push the fabric through. :)

  8. I did a bit of rug hooking in my teens and quite enjoyed it. I love the more abstract rugs, which I imagine are wall hangings. Such great textures ... the one above the owl is something that you could really admire for some time. The owl is great too. Yes, next time always take your camera!! I'm heading over to a quilt show next weekend, so I must remember to charge the battery on my camera ;) Wendy x

  12. Good Evening Linda, Oh my word, these rugs are fabulous.... I love the tulip rug. In my mind I was thinking that I would not make a traditional hooky rug, but this is something else. It would be fun to draw a design, collect the materials and create the rug..... you never know, I might just do it.
Thank you, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your day at the community centre.... and how fabulous.... bargains as well.
    Best Wishes
    Daphne
