Baby Pixie Hat

A cute little crochet pixie hat with a knitted brim to give a nice cosy fit.

For a crochet version just substitute the knitted rib with a crochet rib or edging of your choice.

This hat is very versatile and can be made in the round or worked flat, I like the finished texture of the hat when it's worked flat, I also prefer to have a straight seam at the back, but everyone has their own preference that's why I have given instructions for both.

The pattern is available in the following sizes.

Measurements

These hats are very simple to make and you can adapt them for larger or smaller sizes just by adding or subtracting 4 stitches, or changing yarn thickness or hook sizes.
The pattern is written with preemie sizes first, larger sizes in brackets.

The instructions are given in both English and US terms (US terms are in brackets)

Abbreviations
ch = chain
dc = double crochet (sc)
htr = half treble (hdc)
tr = treble (dc)
ss slip stitch.

Materials

Double knit Yarn 
Approximately 25 gram for the larger sizes and 15 gram for the preemie size.

4 mm crochet hook

4mm dpns or circular needle.

Tension 19 stitches and 18 pattern rows to four inches.

The hats are worked from the brim to the crown. 

Pattern for Hat Made in the Round

Brim

The knitted brim can be worked flat with two needles cast off then sewn to form a circle, or worked in the round with dpns or circulars as you please.

Cast on 52(60, 64) sts and work 4(6, 6) rows k1,p1 rib.

Body of hat

Worked with alternating rows of dc(sc) and htr(hdc)

Round 1 -You can either cast off in rib, then with a 4mm hook dc(sc) 52( 60,64) sts around cast off edge or... 
change to 4mm hook and dc(sc)  all 52(60, 64) sts off needle, ss to first dc(sc)

Round 2 - ch1, htr(hdc) into same st, htr(hdc) in each st round, ss into first htr(hdc) not first ch1

Round 3 - ch1, dc(sc) in same st, dc(sc) into each st round, ss to first dc(sc) not first ch1
Repeat the last two rows on these 52(60,64) sts until until 8(11,12) rounds have been worked.

The hat should now measure 2½(3,3½) inches from beginning, you can add extra rounds here if needed.

Crown
The crown is worked by decreasing four stitches in every round.

Round 1 - ch1, dec in first 2 sts, work 11(13,14) dc(sc), *dec in next 2 sts, work 11(13,14) sts* rep from* to * to end of round, ss to first dc(sc)

Round 2 - ch1, dec in first 2 sts, work 10(12,13) htr(hdc), *dec in next 2 sts, work  10(12,13) sts*, work from * to * to end of round, ss to first htr(hdc)

Now work each following round from chart below beginning at 44(52,56) sts

You can decide how pointy you would like your hat by finishing with 8 or 4 sts  

To finish 

Cut yarn and thread through remaining stitches and fasten off, weave in ends.
Have fun with these little hats, use up your stash yarn and make them stripy, add a pom pom or tassel, embellish them with applique.

Pattern for Hat Worked Flat 

Brim
Cast on 52(60, 64) sts and work 4(6, 6) rows k1,p1 rib. Do not cast off.

Body of hat
Worked with alternating rows of dc(sc) and htr(hdc)

Row 1 - change to 4mm hook and dc(sc)  all 52(60, 64) sts off needle, 2ch turn.

Row 2 - htr(hdc) in each st across, 1ch turn.

Row 3 - dc(sc) in each st across, 2ch turn.

Repeat the last two rows on these 52(60,64) sts until until 8(11,12) rows have been worked.

The hat should now measure 2½(3,3½) inches from beginning, you can add extra rows here if needed.

Crown
The crown is worked by decreasing eight stitches on every alternate row.

Keeping pattern rows correct :-

Row 1- work 5(6,6)sts, work  3tog, *work 10(12, 13)sts, work 3tog* to last 5(6,7)sts work across these sts to end. 44(52,56) sts

Row 2  and every alt row work 44 (52, 56) straight.

Now work from charts below
