Yarn Bombing The Station.

Early last Sunday morning before most people had even risen from their beds a group of knitters armed with bags and bags of knitted and crocheted items, arrived at Seaham station, the plan was to decorate the station and put a smile on peoples faces after the long dreary months of Covid-19 and lockdown.

The theme -  Trains and Flowers

As commuters stood on the platform watching with interest, the station was slowly transformed, passing trains revealed passengers smiling pointing and peering out of the windows trying to get a good look at what was going on.

It took nearly three hours but the results were well worth the effort, it was a lot of fun and we all enjoyed every minute of it. As people came and went it was obvious that it was a huge success, questions were asked about the u3a and lots of interest was shown.

I left a lot of my painted stones around with our u3a address on the back, which have incidentally become quite famous the picture of my rocks was the headline in the June u3a National Newsletter.

It has led to requests for me to teach how to paint rocks which made me smile as I'm certainly no expert, I can however point people in the right direction and I may start a Rock Art tab at the top of my blog which will have links as to where people can find more information.

In other news our u3a website has been down for almost a week, apparently the auto renew for our domain didn't work and so we have had to purchase it again, it's been quite complicated process but thankfully it's now working again.  It brought it home to me just how poor my knowledge is in terms of technology, anything out of the ordinary completely throws me.

I have been so busy with u3a things these past two weeks I haven't had much time for anything else so I'm now off to have a look around blogland to see what you have all been up to.

Have a great week.

  1. Wow Linda! The station looks fabulous! Well done to everybody involved. A lot of hard work and effort, but well worth it. I hope it sticks around long enough for our next visit so that we can see it. As for not being an 'expert' at rock painting - I would strongly disagee with that - your stones are beautiful and I can quite see a U3A group starting for it! xxx

  4. Glad to see that the yarnbombing plan came to fruition and that it brought curious smiles and questions from passersby. It's nice when a group can make a plan, do their part and come together for the final project. Your rocks are a hit because they are so fun and colorful. When I've been a part of rock painting here at the community garden (no longer active), the kids and adults always had the best time. Congrats on the successful outcome of all your hard work and that of the group. Take care.

  11. The yarn bombing turned out awesome! What fun that must have been to do, and to watch you do! :) And how fun that your rocks photo headed the recent article on u3a in the National Newsletter! I got lost a bit in the newsletter. I was both annoyed and amused reading young people's opinions about what is apropriate wear for the 60+ crowd. lol

  12. I think anything out of the ordinary regarding technology throws most of us. =) Seaham station looks fabulous with all the gorgeous yarn bombing! Goodness, there are so many fabulous woolly pretties to see. I can just imagine the smiles on people's faces as they stand on the station or whizz by on a train. Of course your painted rocks are famous; they are all fabulous.

  14. Great to hear the Yarn Bombing was successful. What a transformation! It looks fabulous and I am sure it was greatly admired by passengers on the trains. All that hard work has paid off...excellent! I am not the least bit surprised you have been asked to teach others rock painting. Your own painted rocks are an inspiration! Many thanks for the treadmill details too. Lets see if I can find it here :-) Keep well Amanda x
